The return of EEID to Penn State, 20 years after the first meeting, is a time for reflection on how the field has developed and where we want the field to go. We are organizing this year's meeting around 4 core themes,Transmission, Within-host Dynamics, Persistence and Heterogeneitythat were central to EEID 2003. This year's keynote speakers will reflect on how these concepts have changed over the last 2 decades and the priority challenges for the future. Workshop
From 20-22 May we will hold a workshop on Communicating Novelty and Controversy in EEID. This three day workshop in science communication will be open to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. We will talk about strategies for communicating novelty and combating misinformation in infectious disease science and strategies to tailor your message to various audiences. The workshop will include presentations from prominent scientists in our field and a 1-day workshop on science communication led by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science

Hike
Conference attendees have the choice of multiple hikes with guided groups or individual self-guided hikes near the Penn State Campus. We will arrange hikes ranging in length from 1.5 to 8 miles. Transportation will be provided for the hikes. At the time of registration you will be asked to indicate a preferred hike so that we can gauge interest and plan accordingly.

Frequenty asked questions
When will registration close?
In person registration is closed as we have hit our participant capacity. Registration for virtual attendance remains open.
Can I cancel my registration, or move to virtual registration?
Yes. To do so please send an email to noncredit@psu.edu and request the change. You will be refunded the balance remaining after the chance or a cancellation fee. Use the subject line “Request to cancel (change) registration for Ecology & Evolution of Infectious Diseases Conference 2023 (to VIRTUAL)“ and include the following information in the body of the email: Name, Email, Phone, Type of registration e.g Student, Post-doc, Faculty/Staff,e.t.c
Do posters have to address the conference themes to be considered?
No. In fact, if you have exciting work that does not fit neatly in one of the 4 session themes, we would be excited to see it in poster form.
What is the poster format?
"Each poster board will be 46”x46” of useable space. Recommended poster dimensions are 36” by 46” (in either landscape or portrait orientation). Posters must be hung with velcro tape that we will provide. Pins, tacks, or non velcro tape will result in the organizers being fined per poster that does not comply. "
Which meals are covered?
For the Workshop, all breakfast and lunches are provided. For the Conference, lunches and coffee breaks will be provided. The Monday night registration event will include appetizers and the dinner will be provided at the Wednesday night dinner.
Where should I stay?
We are currently negotiating with Penn State for access to dorms for workshop attendees and students. We will update the Travel section as this information becomes available. We have arranged blocks of rooms at local hotels within walking distance of the conference location. Please see the Travel section for details.
If I apply to a workshop do I also have to register for the conference?
Yes, all conference participants must register for the conference, regardless of participation in workshops.
What COVID-19 precautions is EEID 2023 taking?
Participant safety is our highest priority. Conference procedures regarding masking and testing will be updated and communicated to attendees in response to the evolving pandemic.
Do you offer child-care services for conference attendees?
We are currently working to provide child-care and lactation services and will provide an update soon.
Where is the hike going to be?
We will be offering several hikes of varying distances. You will be asked to indicate a preference for length at the time of registration. A few weeks before the meeting, we will send a follow-up email with details on the finalized hikes and you will be asked to chose from among the options at that time.
Do I have to go on the hike? What else can I do that afternoon?
No. In fact, we will choose hikes of several distances, including at least one short walk that will be entirely within walking distance of the conference facility. There will be two optional afternoon activities that pair well with the shorter hike options. The first will be a be a discussion of classroom strategies for teaching infectious disease biology. The second will be an information session about research and career opportunities at the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics. Both activities will be held from 3:30-4:30 on Wednesday, 24 May in the Millennium Science Complex, adjacent to the meeting venue. We encourage attendees who would prefer to use the hike time slot for meetings on special topics to get in touch with the conference organizers and we will be happy to help arrange space.
Is Lucy going to be on one of the hikes?
Yes, she sure is.
Is Lucy going to be attending the conference?
Lucy has a really nice yard a few blocks from the conference and she has to hear about infectious disease research all the time anyway. But she will absolutely show up for some conference events and anyone who needs a break from the meeting is welcome to take the short walk over to her house to say hi.
